Broad Scope and Purpose of Position
- The Music Director provides the primary artistic vision for the organization and motivation for artistic growth to its singing members.
- The Music Director ensures the artistic quality of concerts and performances within budget guidelines and continuing membership of qualified singers.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for the artistic management of the organization.
- Establishes, with Board approval, an artistic programming philosophy that supports the strategic plan of the organization.
- Plans and implements music programs that take into account the budget, technical abilities, size of the chorus, and interests of the DGCS audience.
- Establishes choral member qualifications and audition policy (subject to Board approval).
- Manages, motivates, and develops the chorus.
- Prepares and conducts rehearsals and concerts.
- Approves concert venues.
- Prepares, conducts, and/or supervises outreach and other community performances.
- Establishes and carries out annual goals to develop the vocal skills of the chorus.
- Oversees selection of soloists and orchestra within budget guidelines for concerts and performances, subject to Board approval.
- Reviews copy for season brochure, programs, publicity, beginning of season letter, etc. as deemed necessary by the Board of Directors.
- Develops and maintains a strong working relationship with the Board of Directors in a team approach to effectively and efficiently achieve all aspects of the artistic vision and administration of the organization.
- Initiates, develops, and maintains relationships with key musical organizations throughout DGCS’s market area.
- Seeks opportunities for strategic alliances and collaborative performances.
- Creates meaningful and lasting community partnerships to identify or champion the mission of the Choral Society.
- Develops and maintains professional musical expertise by participating in musical and professional organizations/societies locally, nationally, and internationally (e.g., American Choral Directors Association, Chorus America, International Federation for Choral Music).
- In partnership with the Board of Directors, provides input for the formation of a fiscally responsible budget to execute the artistic vision.
Qualifications
- Experience, demonstrated knowledge, and mastery of choral and orchestral conducting.
- Exceptional skills in choral music preparation and rehearsal techniques.
- Ability to work successfully with volunteer singers.
- Comprehensive understanding of various repertoires.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the musical score and its contemporary or historical context.
- Comprehensive knowledge of the voice and orchestral instruments.
- Knowledge and understanding of languages, choral diction/articulation.
- Ability to employ team and group dynamics to work efficiently, effectively, and enthusiastically in rehearsals.
- Ability to inspire and communicate effectively with chorus, soloists, and orchestra.
- Masters Degree in Music preferred, or equivalent knowledge.
